  2. I live an hour out of Brisbane on the beautiful Sunshine Coast (home to the beaches). If you can't make it there, or to the Gold Coast (home of the high rises and theme parks), then there are lots of fun things to do in the city.

Unfortunately I don't know any cheap places to stay. Brisbane is a very small place, so you can travel by CityCat on the river or walk to these destinations.

Firstly, check out Southbank - there's a man-made beach, rainforest walks, ferris wheel, Gallery of Modern Art, boutiques and cafes, $5 movie tickets (with DELICIOUS sushi next door to the cinema).

If you want nightlife, go to Fortitude Valley. China Town and the Sunday markets are also in the Valley (although there are construction works around China Town at the moment).

In the City, you can shop in the Queen Street Mall and (have a look in Sportsgirl, Witchery & Country Road) and chill out in the Botanical Gardens.

And remember, Australians are very friendly people so don't hesitate to ask for recommendations or directions at any time!

P.S. The city is VERY hot at the moment.
P.P.S. Are you going to live in Sydney or Melbourne??

    Hope this helps, Kate

  19. Hi, i'm from brisbane... suggest you stay at one of the best westerns they are clean. Brisbane doesn't really have many hostels so don't worry about that.

go to cloudland in the valley at night or for a drink and zuri for dinner. i'd try and centralise yourself around new farm or the valley.

  20. i'm also from brisbane, not as exciting as sydney or melbourne, but we're having the best weather at the moment and it's only going to heat up for summer! definitely opt for new farm over the valley (valley can get pretty seedy). james street in new farm/the valley has a great little splay of shops and cafes.. try jamie's espresso on robertson street (just off james). ann street in the valley has some nice trendy stores (some are pricey too), and broadway on the mall and queens plaza (queen street in the cbd) is your best bet for high-end fashion shopping. other than that, not too much to do.. picnic in new farm park is nice, orrr either coast (sunshine in the north or gold in the south) both have great beaches. gold coast is tourist central, research surfers paradise to get a feel for that. safe travelling!

  21. come visit melbourne we have the best laneways, you will keep discovering great little hidden designer shops.
Then take a break and travel the great ocean road!

  22. youre gonna have so much fun ! I did the same trip 4 years ago and i did it alone and it was a blast! I llanded in auckland, flew up to Oz and went up the coast. in airlie beach (where you'll dock to sail the whisundays) i met three people with a car and we ADVENTURED (no joke, had two brushes with death) the outback down to Victoria.

but if there's one thing i remember: Manly. when you get to Sydney, take the ferry to Manly and stay at Boardriders hostel. it's tiny so everyone knows each other and the vibe is sooooo awesome. seriously half regret not staying there longer and heading up the coast to quickly.

    xx

  23. I'm from Adelaide (more like RADelaide) and I love the laid-back atmosphere, great weather and I think South Australia has way better beaches than the eastern states. However shopping is definitely better in Melbourne and Sydney. (As much as I enjoy Melbourne, though, I could never live there due to the yucky weather!) Melbourne and Sydney are pretty much impossible to get around, too.
